Saturday, June 6th – The Durham County Library, the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library (SLW), Preservation Durham, and the Museum of Durham History will host “Have Mercy Baby: The Life of Clyde McPhatter,” an author talk with McPhatter biographer Steve Bergsman, Debbie McPhatter, the singer’s daughter, and music journalist Howard Burchette. The free event will run from 2-4 pm at SLW, located at 1201 Fayetteville Street in downtown Durham.
Born in the Bull City on November 15, 1932, Clyde McPhatter started as a gospel singer. He was later the lead tenor of Billy Wards and His Dominoes. After leaving the Dominoes, he formed his group The Drifters. McPhatter was one of the most commonly imitated singers of the 1950s and early 1960s. He has legacy of over 22 years as a rhythm and blues, soul, and rock and roll singer.
